Family of Italian Renaissance painters,
founders of the Venetian school.
Jacopo (c. 1400-70) was father to Gentile and
Giovanni. Little of his work has survived,
but two of his sketchbooks (exhibited in the
British Museum and the Louvre) contain his
ideas and designs. Gentile (c. 1429-1507)
assisted in the decoration of the Doge's
Palace 1474 and worked in the court of
Muhammad II at Constantinople (a portrait of
the sultan is in the National Gallery,
London). His also painted processional groups
(Accademia, Venice). Giovanni (c.1430-1516),
Gentile's younger brother, studied under his
father, and painted portraits and various
religious subjects. Giovanni Bellini's early
works show the influence of his
brother-in-law, Mantegna. His style developed
from the static manner of mid-15th century
Venetian work towards a High Renaissance
harmony and grandeur, as in the altarpiece
1505 in Sta Zaccaria, Venice. He introduced
softness in tone, harmony in composition, and
a use of luminous colour that influenced the
next generation of painters (including his
pupils Giorgione and Titian). He worked in
oil rather than tempera, a technique adopted
from Antonello da Messina.
